Sister Stanislaus Poehnelt, age 96, Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross, passed to Eternal Life on December 19, 2009 at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, Wisconsin.




Sister Stanislaus was born Julia, in Whittlesey, WI on February 17, 1913, daughter of Julius and Anna (Ramskugler) Poehnelt. She was the oldest of 8 children. She entered Holy Cross Convent in Merrill, WI, on July 16, 1928, at the age of 15. She celebrated her First Profession on September 15, 1933, and was in her 77 year in ministry.




As teacher, prefect, and principal, Sister Stanislaus spent 53 years in education. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education from Catholic University of America. She received a principal’s certificate from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.




She was a teacher and principal at St. John the Evangelist, Deer Park, Ohio; St Mary’s School, Antigo, Wisconsin; and St. Robert’s School and Our Lady of the Holy Cross High School, both of Merrill, WI.




Sister Stanislaus retired to Bell Tower Residence in 1990. Until recently she served as Holy Cross Chapel sacristan and did other volunteer work. She loved to sew and create many works of art.




Funeral will be in Holy Cross Chapel, Bell Tower Residence, at 10:30 a.m. on December 23, 2009, with Father Dan Crosby, OFM, capuchin, presiding. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5p.m. to 7 p.m. in Holy Cross Chapel in Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, WI. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.




Sister Stanislaus is survived by the Holy Cross Sisters and Associates. In addition she is survived by three brothers: Clement Poehnelt, Eden, New York; Max Poehnelt, San Pablo, California; Matt Poehnelt, Holcombe, WI. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.




She was preceded in death by brothers: Tony Poehnelt and Victor Poehnelt, and sisters, Cecilia Olson, and Kate Plasil.
