Myrtle Fischer

September 19, 1921 — January 3, 2020

Myrtle G. Fischer, age 98, of Merrill, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2020 at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, with her family by her side and under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services.  She was born on September 19, 1921 to the late Gustaf and Stella (Johnson) Englund in Prentice, WI.  Myrtle attended high school in Prentice and Tripoli.  She met her soul mate, Andrew Fischer, and the two exchanged marriage vows on February 28, 1942 in Merrill.  Sadly, Andrew preceded her in death on September 1, 2016.

Myrtle worked in bookkeeping for most of her adult life, first at Weinbrenner Shoe Factory for over 20 years, then at People’s IGA, which she and Andrew owned and operated for many years.  Myrtle was a former secretary for the 6th Ward Business Association.  When they retired, Myrtle and Andrew would enjoy taking their annual trip to Florida during the winter months, which they did for 25 years.  She was an excellent homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, she looked forward to spending time with her family.  Myrtle was a quiet, giving and compassionate woman that always tried to help where she could.  In her spare time, she enjoyed doing needlepoint, especially plastic canvas projects and she liked to help others organize and plan their trips.  Myrtle was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a current member at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Ladies Knights of Columbus.

Myrtle is survived by her son: LeRoy (Connie) Fischer of Merrill, daughter: Kathy (Robert-deceased) Monnot of Merrill, grandchildren: Duane (Lisa) Fischer of Marshfield, Linda (Duane) Moore of Pewaukee, LeRoy E. (Carol) Fischer, Scott (Danielle) Monnot, Andrew (Brenda) Monnot and Chad (Lynn) Monnot, all of Merrill, 8 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Sherry Henrich of Wausau, Larry (Lori) Beyer of Alaska, Mike (Denise) Beyer of Gleason and Pat (Laura) Beyer of Gleason.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Andrew Fischer, daughter: Andrea Fischer, son-in-law: Robert Monnot, step-granddaughter: Nancy Podgorski, sisters: Laura, Mae, Violet, Alice and Delores, brother: Everett and grandson: David Fischer.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Myrtle will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 12:00 noon at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Merrill.  Father Jim Horath will officiate.  Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 9:00 am until 11:45 am at Waid Funeral Home.  Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, immediately following Mass.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials in Myrtle’s name be directed to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic church and school.

Myrtle’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and volunteers at Pine Crest Nursing Home for taking such good care of their mom, and for the love and support shown to her family, especially from the special nurses and friends, Dave and Jeanne.

Notice: LeRoy’s Hair Care Center, 724 E. 2nd Street, Merrill, will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2020, so he can attend his mother’s funeral.
