Mary Jane Nielsen, of Merrill, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Pine Crest Nursing Home. She was born in Hudson, Wisconsin on February 27, 1919 to the late Kristian John and Della (Gatien) Nielsen. After attending the St. Francis Xavier Grade School and the Merrill High School, Mary Jane attended the Hamilton School or Commerce in Mason City, Iowa. Prior to her retirement in 1981, Mary Jane was employed in the office of the Merrill Manufacturing Corporation for 43 years. She was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Merrill, and a member of their Council of Catholic Women's Club. Mary Jane was the captain of the Merrill Cardinals Girl's Softball Team. She was one of five Merrill Cardinal softball players to be invited by Eddie Stumpf, manager of the Kenosha Comets All-American Girls Proball League, to their tryouts in April of 1945. Mary Jane was inducted into the Merrill Historical Society's Women in History Hall of Fame on March 22, 1998. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, working in the yard, writing letters and especially having friends in for coffee breaks at her home. She is survived by cousins and relatives in Denmark and many friends in Merrill. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Father Chris Kemp will preside. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of mass also at the church. Burial will follow in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis Xavier Church Building Fund or to the charity of your choice. Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
