LaVerne Bergman

February 25, 1929 — July 27, 2009

LaVerne F. “Bergy” Bergman, age 80, of Gleason, died Monday, July 27 at his residence, surrounded by his family under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.




LaVerne was born February 25, 1929, in the Township of Summit, the son of the late Friederick and Anna (Gnahn) Bergman.




LaVerne married Virginia Robison June 15, 1957 at Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo.




He was employed by Rhinelander Paper Company for 40 years. LaVerne and Virginia also farmed together 16 years in Rhinelander and 9 in Gleason.




LaVerne served his county in the Marine Corps, he was in the Battle of  Chosin, one of the Chosin few during the Korean War.


He truly enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, gardening, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and was an all around handy man.




He was a member of Luther Memorial Church in Gleason, Gleason VFW Post #10915, where he was a life member, and he served both as Post Commander and Quarter Master.




Survivors include: wife of 52 years, Virginia,


Children: Fred “Rick” (Amanda) Bergman of Gleason,


Christine (Robert Sr.) Sackett of Rhinelander,


Calvin (Linda) Bergman of Gleason,


Grandchildren: Robert Jr. (Crystal) Sackett,


Cassandra Sackett,


William Peterson,


Nicole Peterson,


4 great grandchildren: Miles, Morgan, Michael and Pazia,


LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Joann, 2 sisters, Evelyn Oestriech, and Dorothy Lee, and brother, Norman Bergman.






Funeral Service will be held 11 am Friday, July 31, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Gleason. The Rev. Steven Anderson will officiate, with burial to follow at the Town of Summit Cemetery, with graveside military honors conducted by Gleason VFW Post #10915. Visitation will be Friday from 9 am until the time of service at the church.


Lunch will be served at the church following the committal service.
