Janice Kay Shaler

March 21, 1933 – December 12, 2020

Janice Kay (nee Weber) Newell Shaler of Sun Prairie, WI, formerly of Merrill, WI, passed away on December 12, at the age of 87.

She was born on March 21, 1933 to Norman and Ella (nee Kakes) Weber in Antigo, Wisconsin, and grew up and attended high school in Merrill, Wisconsin. Jan attended secretarial school at Prospect Hall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and she worked at her father’s window company before marrying her neighbor, Richard Newell, on August 3, 1957. They had three children together. After Richard died in 1969, she raised her three sons alone until she married Kenneth Shaler in 1975.

Jan was a loving and generous mother and grandmother, a devoted Methodist, and an excellent cook. She enjoyed crafting/stitchery, playing the piano, singing in her church choir, gardening, and going for walks. Jan was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for 30 years and volunteered in many capacities including Meals on Wheels, and the library at a local hospital. She also worked for a number of years as a Wedding Planner for churches.  She modeled Christian values, always remembered family birthdays, loved anything chocolate, and brought fun wherever she went. Asked to give life advice, she said “laugh often and much.”

Jan is survived by her children Mark (Kerri) Newell of Rolla, MO, Bruce (Janice) Newell of Sun Prairie, WI, grandchildren Richard (Taylor) Newell, Jason (Jennifer) Newell, Adam (Kelly) Newell, and great-grandchildren Della and Jackson; step-son Steve (Kendall) Shaler of Old Towne, ME, and step-daughter Nancy (Charlie) Clauss of Minneapolis, MN; step-grandchildren Ross Shaler, Kelsey Shaler, and Amelia and Margaret Clauss. She is also survived by brothers Bill (Carol) Weber and Jerry (Sandy) Weber, brother-in-law George Dintelman, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Richard Newell and Kenneth Shaler, son Jon Newell, sister Barbara Dintelman, and a special aunt, Alvina (Kakes) Kressel.

Funeral Service for Janice will be at 1PM on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Waid Funeral Home.  Visitation will be from 12:30PM until the time of service on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Waid Funeral Home in Merrill, WI.  Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park.
