Herman "Herm" F. Zunker Jr.

Herman F. Zunker Jr., age 88, of Merrill, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Aspirus Wausau Hospital, after many courageous battles with cancer. He was born on February 8, 1936, to the late Herman and Wilma (Winkert) Zunker Sr. in Wausau, WI. Herm attended and graduated from Wausau High School, before entering the United States Army, where he honorably served until his discharge. He married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Schultz, on November 8, 1958 in Wausau, WI, their marriage lasting over 65 years.

Herm worked as a lineman for WPS for over 35 years, until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling, especially trips with their dear friends Anne and Nubs Ashbeck. He loved flying and earned his private pilot’s license. He was also a musician, being a member of The Dan Gruetzmacher Orchestra. Herm was very active in their church, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Merrill, where he was a member of the choir. Later in life, he was honored with being able to go on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, an experience that meant a lot to him and his family.

Herm will be missed dearly, but never forgotten.

Herm leaves behind his wife: Joanne Zunker of Merrill, sons: Mark (Lynette) Zunker of California and Brian (Lisa) Zunker of Triploi, WI, grandsons: Tim Zunker and Ben (Stephanie) Gustin, great grandchildren: Milla and Rhys and sister-in-law: Barbara Zunker. He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Kurt Zunker, grandson: Gregory Zunker, brother: James Zunker, and nephew: Jay Zunker.

A private family service will be held at Waid Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life and military honors will take place at a later date. Please check back for updates.
