Elaine G. Alft, 88, of Tomahawk, formerly of Merrill, died Monday, November 2, 2009 at Golden Age Living Center in Tomahawk. She was born September 4, 1921, in Merrill, to the late Edwin and Gertrude (Sisson) Alberg. Elaine graduated from Tomahawk High School in 1940. After graduating, she married Melvin Alft on June 7, 1941 in Merrill. Elaine worked at Merrill Manufacturing and Hanson Glove Company and later became a homemaker. She enjoyed snowmobiling, crocheting, sewing, playing cards in card clubs and cooking. Elaine was a member of St. Stephens United Church of Christ. Elaine was a Packer fan and also enjoyed polka music, especially Lawrence Welk.
Survivors include her two sons: Terry (Judy) Alft and Jim (Jan) Alft, all of Merrill; her daughter: Joanne (Robert) Harkner of Eagle River; eight grandchildren: Cary (Jill) Alft, Dena (Bruce) Novotny, Darin (Valerie Sabatke) Alft, Becky (Jeff) Roberts, David (Johnille) Alft, Jessi (Brad Stevens)Alft, Angie (Dale) Lemke and Stephanie (Brett) Oren; and 15 great grandchildren; one brother Duane (Pat) Alberg; one sister: Edna Koebe; and her sister-in-law: Alice Alberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, brother Melvin Alberg, sister Audrey Saeger, and brothers-in-law Roman Koebe and Bob Saeger.
Services will be held Friday, November 20, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Waid Funeral Home. Visitation will start at 9:00 AM and continue until the time of service at the Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Hawker will officiate. Burial to follow at Merrill Memorial Park. Donations may be made to The American Cancer Society. Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
