Clifford Sabatke

February 22, 1925 — February 4, 2010

Clifford A. Sabatke, 84, of Merrill, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.


Cliff was born in Merrill on February 22, 1925 to the late Leslie and Ella (Jaeger) Sabatke Sr. He married Shirley Porath on September 26, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Merrill.


While Clifford was a young man, he worked on the family farm. He also worked as a logger in Michigan. He served in the Army from 1950 – 1953. Cliff worked at Anson & Gilkey for 32 years as a window and door manufacturer. He then worked at Semco for 8 years, also manufacturing windows and doors. Cliff was an Elder at Trinity Lutheran Church where he was a member for over 50 years. He served as Chaplain for the District and the Local VFW Post 1638 where he was a VFW Honor Guard Member for over 20 years. In his spare time, Cliff enjoyed carpentry, building barns for his grandchildren, spending time at his camper up north, gardening, and playing dart ball. He was also an avid fan of the Packers and Brewers. Cliff was very involved with the VFW Post 1638 and the local Eagles Club and was also a member of the Disabled Veterans of America.


Survivors include his wife: Shirley; 3 children: Keith (Sue Ann) Sabatke, Wausau, Yvonne (Pat) Woller, Merrill, and LuAnn (Steve) Steger, Gleason; 10 grandchildren: Shawn (Sarah) Sabatke, Jason (Jammie) Woller, Nicole (Pete Berna) Woller, Jacob (Amanda) Sabatke, Michele Steger, Amy Woller, Sara Steger, Rebecca Liss, Nicole(Bill) Kelch, T.J. (Brenda) Liss; 19 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Phyllis Schlueter and Mary Ann (Don) Forester; 3 brothers: LaVern (Diane Huston) Sabatke, Les (Pearl) Sabatke Jr., Larry (Lois) Sabatke, brother-in-law: Lylas Berndt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son: Dwight Sabatke; sister: Bernice Berndt; brother: Jack Sabatke and brother-in-law: Ray Schlueter.


Services will be held Monday, February 8, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Brian Stolarczyk will officiate. Friends may call Sunday, February 7 from 4-8 PM at Waid Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Local VFW Post 1638. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Church Radio Ministry or the Local VFW Post 1638.
