Beryl Lewinnek, 93, died April 10, 2009 at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Services.
Mrs. Lewinnek was born October 28, 1915, in Antigo, to Oscar and Clara Nelson. She graduated from Antigo High School and from the Columbia School of Nursing in Milwaukee. In 1940, she married Walter Lewinnek, MD. They moved to Merrill in 1947 where they became very involved in the community.
Her community activities were varied. Beryl was active in the Red Feather drives, a predecessor of the Community Chest and United Way; the local square dancing group; the Birch Trails Girl Scout Council, serving as a troop leader and as a trainer of new troop leaders; the American Field Service program; Merrill’s 150
th
anniversary celebration (co-ordinating the history of dance program); and in later years conducted self-exam programs for breast cancer detection.
Beryl took great pleasure in sailing and hiking with her husband, in their travels across the country and to Europe, and in providing wonderful meals to friends and family visiting her home.
Beryl is preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and by her siblings Iris Johnson of Milwaukee and Eric Nelson of Antigo. She is survived by her children George Lewinnek of Fitchburg, MA, and Susan Lewinnek Murray (and husband Robin) of Melrose, MA; four grandchildren: Karen Teelin, her husband Tim and son Owen, of Fayetteville, NY; Elaine Lewinnek, her husband Ben and daughter Sophie of Cardiff, CA; David Lewinnek and his wife Shana of Somerville, MA; and Sarah Murray of Chicago, IL; and by her sister-in-law Jane Nelson and numerous nieces, nephews, long-time friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday April 26, 2009 at Waid Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Beckel will officiate. Friends may call from noon until 4:00 PM on Saturday April 25, 2009 and again on Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 pm at the Waid Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Merrill Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the staff of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and the staff of the special care unit at Pine Crest Nursing Home.
